Affiliate Marketing Vs. MLM

Wouldn’t it be nice to stop chasing Family and Friends, Become a Network Marketing Pro with Digital Marketing?

Yes, the old way of making a list of 100 Family & Friends while not prejudging them to decide who will and who won’t be interested in the new Direct Sales, Network Marketing, MLM and/or “Home Based Business” Business that you have decided to share and build your wealth and dreams.

I’m not judging you or anyone else, I was also involved in a Network Marketing, Direct Sales, Multi-Level Company where I was advised to in the fastest manner possible share in person with everyone that I knew.  Starting with the people who I knew the closest and who would support me the most.

In most cases as you well know, not only did most of them not join me with my new journey to financial independence, most of them answered “I’ll see how you do then get in if you do well”.  In the back of their minds of course many if not most of them had already decided that I would not only fail miserably but that I would quit in no time at all.

Fast forward a few years and I’ll now share with you how I’ve been sharing the “Digital Marketing Veteran” way and how I also advise all Friends who would like to start and grow a true “Home Based Business” working 100% completely from home.  Remember how the old way of working a “Home Based Business” involved more time away from home?  Hotel and/or house meetings, driving all over town for sharing with Friends and Family either via a DVD or pamphlet presentation etc…. Not anymore!

There is a much easier and better way with Digital Marketing to become a Network Marketing Professional and 100% from home or from wherever you are and in any part of our world.  There are over 3 Billion People currently online today, yes that’s Billion with a B!

What if I told you that you could start to generate a full time income from home with far fewer than 3 Billion people on your team?  How about if I were to tell you that you can earn a very nice income with fewer than even 30 personal referrals out of the over 3 Billion people online?  Even though you may be saying that 30 still sounds like a lot, remember that we are not talking about sharing with Family & Friends in person like you have done in the past.

I myself in the past 3 years have personally sponsored/referred over 3,000 Friends to either one or all of my Top Recommendations that I share right here on my website assisting Friends in earning an income online.

Below I will also share posts from my website here that you can click upon to learn more about the sites that I recommend for You and all Friends to earn a full time income from anywhere on the Planet!

So, exactly how do I suggest that You utilize the above sites in order to grow your current Direct Sales, Network Marketing, MLM, Work from Home, Home Based Company and 100% online?

I am so glad that you asked!

Global Moneyline is also an exceptional place to share all of the above as well.

CB Pro Ads is a ready made storefront that you can easily link your Clickbank ID to and have thousands of digital products available to anyone who visits your site.

Friends & Family Worldwide

Oh, back to your Family & Friends…..

Once you start earning an income 100% online and from home, your Family and Friends will take notice then approach you with curiosity.  Not only will you then be able to share with the willing, you’ll also be able to show them that you are successful.  Remember earlier that we agreed that the most common thing that our Family & Friends tell us is that they’ll “Wait and see how you do and join you when you’re doing well”?

The time is now my Friend, let’s get to where you’re being successful without chasing Family & Friends then they’ll come chasing you.

Comment below with any thoughts and/or questions, talk with you soon.

  1. Some mlm groups work, when they have a real product to sell, like Mary Kay, for example, you can make money working for this mlm corp but if they only sales you make is convincing people to join the company and they too can make a commission selling it to their friends it’s a con. Don’t fall for the scam if you don’t have something of value to sell outside the membership.

  2. Well, I was actually a bandwagon too a while ago before I get into Affiliate marketing and MLM’s. Though somewhat different, they are actually related at least for me. But what to choose between them? For starters, Affiliate marketing is really there to help you start your business online. It can help you build a website for yourself and etc. Wherein in this website, you can generate an affiliate link in which you can earn money if someone clicks on it and buys through that link. So I guess at this point, I will say that Affiliate marketing is still a safer bet and a better way to generate money.

  7. Hello there, Tony! This is a great explanation on what MLM and affiliate marketing is and how they differ. I used to work with MLM but it was hard because the programs I was in required me to continuously make sales to keep the current benefits (and some programs felt like scams). But later I found affiliate marketing and I think this is much better opportunity for me. The affiliate links I provide come from a well trusted company (particularly Amazon). Thanks for creating articles like these to help educate us and for always providing us with tools to help with the online business.

  12. Well MLM had some benefits before. For example, you can regrute some people as your “referals” and you can live nicely from their work and their referalls, if you are on the top of that pyramid.

Comparing with affiliate marketing, there are just a few offers with mlm pyramid and you mostly depend on your own list, audience and authority you have.

Both have some benefits comparing each other, but personaly i prefer mlm, if i am on top, of course 🙂

I’ve known people who have done Amway and Monovie, only to break the bank.

Trying to convince friends and family to join in just so you can earn on top of them? Nehh never again. I am glad I became interesting in affiliate marketing not long ago, it is undoubtedly on of the best ways to make money online from your comfort

Thanks for this comparison, I have a friend who argues on this topic a lot with me I am sharing it to him right away so he can see for himself. Thanks

  16. To date, many of my friends are still reeling from the collapse of the MMM Ponzi scheme. And many have been jumping from one MLM group to the other. Some come in as scams and others soon get saturated. The Upline downline problem does not help matters as the upline being inactive hinders an active downline.

Affiliate marketing happens to be the new in, particularly in these days of lockdown and work at home due to Covid 19. Bravo on a well-crafted article.

  22. That is a big part in this it’s very hard to get people To come on board I had the same issue and the ones who did join didn’t stick with it and give it a honest effort as they should. Those people don’t understand how this kind of thing works they expect to see results immediately and don’t want to take the time to build a business online.  It takes time just like any other business but it’s not for everyone that’s why most people don’t make it. But it’s not as hard as people make it out to be it just takes a very dedicated individual to be successful. Congratulations to you for making it my freind huge accomplishment!

A genuine illustration of this is the Wealthy Affiliate Platform which teams up from building a site to bringing deals through a partner. I, when all is said and done, am an individual from Wealthy Affiliate from where I got capable through preparing. Today I am effective in the realm of associate advertising. At long last, I can say decisively that associate advertising is a higher priority than MLM and considerably more viable at this point.

  25. Affiliate marketing is one of the best business models ever! The difference between affiliate marketing and MLM might not be extremely clear to beginners, and I think that the easiest way to explain it is that when you run an affiliate marketing business you don’t make commissions on the referrals of your referrals, so money isn’t split into thousands of people and it’s not “wasted” – for this reason, I appreciate affiliate marketing far more than MLM, even because many times the companies that work on an MLM basis are more focused in acquiring new people than on selling their products correctly!

  26. I think I’m more of a fan of affiliate marketing over MLM.  I’ve just never liked trying to sell my friends on a MLM and I’ve never really like my friends trying to get me to join MLMs.  I have to admit I do feel some of the same feelings about affiliate marketing.  Often you’re encouraged to share your posts on social media, but I don’t like the idea of sharing the content I write with my personal network.  Maybe I just need to setup social media accounts for just my websites.

I’ve heard some people say affiliate marketing is outdated but given just how many niches and people there are on the internet, I still think there’s plenty of money to go around. Some people may be wary now, but I’m sure in a few decades or less it’ll be quite normalized to run an online business like this.

  29. Hi Tony, another class post by you. You have made a very good point about using friends and family with your digital marketing. I was very dubious initially as I was afraid of failure and didn’t want my friends or family to ridicule me. However, one I got started with wealthy affiliate I was enjoying it so much I started to drip feed information to my friends and family. My sister now has a successful online greeting cards company and a friend of mine is half way to a great business with a niche market in car cleaning products. I was also interested in the CBProAds and will be looking into that in the future. Thanks again.

  31. The question of Affiliate Marketing Vs. MLM as presented in your post again reminds me of why I love affiliate marketing.  The days of MLM were not successful for me.  My selling times- yes times! are in the past, and will stay there.  That was painful and brutal. So glad to have another route nowadays.  You have pretty well summed up all the pros and cons and anyone who is thinking about MLM should really consider this information.  Yes, some personalities do well with MLM, but I didn’t.  There were not as many chances to change your presentation in MLM as we can do with Affiliate Marketing to find a better product for our clients. 32. I like the idea of digital marketing much more than network marketing, that is, MLM business, since I worked in a company related to MLM and they didn’t have any reward plan, that is, it was impossible. I worked well. I had a monthly income of $ 200. for their company selling products and I have little of what I had because of course I had to buy products and try them out. or something like that. I would recommend affilate marketing and digital marketing to everyone, since there is a bigger and better income and you work at home, you don’t offer or sell anything to anyone, you don’t pull anyone by the sleeve.

  35. Hi Tony, to be honest with you I think your descriptions of how your friends and family reacted when you invited them to join whatever new network marketing opportunity you had come across, were probably the most positive and printable ones. Some years ago I lived in a somewhat new age community and there wasn’t a single network marketing, MLM, or whatever scheme that didn’t get a foothold. I knew people who spent their lives and energies jumping from one scheme to another, whether it was Amway, or a similar clone, food supplements, water filters. You could barely go shopping for groceries in the local store without someone you knew trying to sign you up for the latest scheme. I’m afraid I still have too strong an association between MLM and poor quality, over-priced items from that period to take any modern MLM scheme seriously. On the other hand, I see many examples of people who have made a success in affiliate marketing. Best regards, Andy

  36. Due to my past experiences with MLM programs i don’t need to think much before deciding which of this is better. Affiliate marketing is by far better and is a more trustworthy program than MLM. Affiliate marketing and MLM may seem similar to some people but there is a big difference between what they want to offer.

It’s good to always find better things to learn about and also make findings into how to make yourself and your  business grow, and for me I have been really concerned about how affiliate marketing tires and is far I’ve come to realise it’s very genuine and less stressful and that stress-free business is something that I like so much.

  38. MLM’s have been pretty much deemed a pyramid scam in my mind. I know a few people who use to do that but have stooped recently. Affiliate marketing is much more doable and you don’t have to pester your friends and family to make a sale. You can just simply post something on facebook and all social media and sit back and watch the sales accurate.

  39. I’m still on the opinion that affiliate marketing is better than MLM and I’m happy we’re on same page. I’ve tried MLM and it just wasn’t for me. It’s not because you have to work really hard because you have to do that in affiliate marketing too but it’s that you have to do the recruiting as you said. I’ll just advise everyone to steer clear of MLM

  44. I would start by saying not all MLM programs are bad, but affiliate marketing is all aspects wins this comparison. Affiliate Marketing comes with a lot of comfort and convenience as one has to only have a PC and internet connection, unlike MLM that requires moving around to make sales. Personally, I would go for affiliate marketing anyday, anytime.

  47. The distinction between the two has always been kind of unclear to me so thanks for clearing that up.  I used to work for a network marketing firm that was overall close to an MLM but just barely did not cross the lines.  Through that job it became clear to me just how powerful affiliate marketing would be.  In that old job I would go door to door and talk to maybe 25 people a day.  With affiliate marketing I have the power to talk to hundreds a day with even more money on the line.  It’s an interesting dichotomy

  48. Hello and thanks for sharing this information. I have learned a lot by reading your articles (and others) about MLM. Not saying it’s bad, but it’s just not my thing. I am not a natural seller and it seems to me to be just too much work for too little gain… I am not against hard work, I just believe all gains should be for you and not someone else. I am definitely for affiliate marketing, even because I can do it with a full time job, and very little investment besides time. I am aiming at making it a home business, along with a small shop of handmade articles (candles). Affiliate marketing seems to be superversatile, you can make it a full time job or just some extra money. You can make it about your favorite hobby or passion. You can work 10h/day or just a few per week. MLM doesn’t work like that, it asks of you full time dedication and even then you don’t feel fully rewarded.

Keep up the good work with post about how to help us rookie affiliate marketers 🙂

    Cheers, Sofia

  49. I think affiliate marketing trumps MLM by a long distance. I am very new to the online business world and still making slow progress, but the WA platform and cash juice has really benefited my niche and i think they are more beneficial for the long term progress than MLM. I think MLM is a short term answer (i.e keep referring to family and friends) unless you have a large network of people which you know, i cannot see how you make a lot of money this way.

    A good article, thank you

  50. Personally, I prefer Affiliate Marketing to MLM. The stress of chasing people around to make a sale is eliminated in affiliate marketing as everything is done digitally. Affiliate Marketing can be done from the comfort of one’s home, all that is needed is a PC and internet connection, no special Marketing skill is needed, but if there is it would be an added advantage.

My social media feed is always full of MLM – it’s always something new and something bigger, better, or brighter. I think the beauty of affiliate marketing is that it allows you to keep control of your interests, use your passions, and modify as your learn and grow (and as the industry changes)!

I once got into a program which required aggressively foraging every Craig’s list page on Facebook just so that I could advertise a “typing service”, have people join, and collect my percentage. While  I did get a positive reaction from some interested persons, I also got treated like a pest and a leaper by many others who were weary of what they deemed to be another stupid  pyramid scheme. I even got kicked out of some of the groups. lol

  55. I totally agree with you about chasing family members; friends it just not going to work. We all need to generate new leads to keep up with the game. MLM is a real thought industry; I have made a lot of money from it, but that all comes to an end. Affiliate marketing is also very competitive, but I feel you are not chasing anyone. I like what they read on your site, bingo, and a sale is created.

With endless progress to choose products from, products to promote it is a wide-open industry.  Great job.

  56. You are 100% on the mark here Tony.
You have described all the probabilities and realities of anyone starting a home based business in the MLM industry.  The reality is far different from the promises. The attending events, driving all over time, house meetings etc – sucks your time so dramatically and the probability of success is so slim.  Sure its possible – but to some people with the X factor or in new markets.  But it really does need an X factor to be able to recruit and “lead” (train others to recruit) and this was something I was never successful with.

I have switched to affiliate marketing as a true home based business.  Its great that you are helping people in MLM – there are enormous opportunities to grow your network online and Tony has presented some great networks where anyone can meet online those like minded people and have greater chances of doing business with than family and friends.

Thanks Tony for the excellent network of resources!

  64. Very interesting comparison. What I can say from my experience is that AM is a much better option than MLM. With MLM, I don’t like that I depend on how many people I bring into the business and not on my personal commitment and effort. Which means that earnings depend on the recruitment of other people. In the case of AM you get as much as you work and try. I think that is definitely a better option and I would always choose AM instead of MLM.

  65. Hey Tony,
I just want to say that I really enjoyed your article about affiliate marketing versus multi level marketing.
My opinion is that MLM doesn’t even come close to what affiliate marketing offers.
With multi level marketing you have to constantly increase your downside and sign people up constantly to make any money and it never works out that’s why I detest MLM.
Once I started affiliate marketing some three years ago I found something that I really wanted to do that works.
It sure beats the heck out of trying to sign up family and friends all the time. Affiliate marketing is a true honest business that you can build into a success.

  67. Hello Tony! To be honest with you I don’t like anything that has to do with multi level marketing. For me, I just feel it’s different Ponzi schemes with different tactics. And again, most of them come with the get rich quick tag. Affiliate marketing remains my best and though it has its own downsides, it’s way better than MLM. And a person gets tired, seeks free time and rest. A week ago I got involved in Affiliate marketing and honestly, I determine the time myself when I dedicate myself to work and when I rest, I am still learning and I am satisfied and motivated here in WA.

  70. Fully agree that affiliate marketing is a better approach than MLM. With MLM, you might become a turnoff by your friends or family if you start approaching them. Either way is hard work, but at least with affiliate marketing, you get to keep relationships with your friends or family positive or neutral. In the end, once we become successful, they will naturally be interested and would like to learn more from you and may then start it themselves. This is where we can gracefully take them in and help them become successful. How meaningful that would be, I feel.

  72. The more I have learned MLMs, the more I understand that most of them are very close to a “disguised pyramid scheme.” If they have pricey goods and a monthly sales limit, which is a major red flag, hiring people into the business is the only way you can make money.

Any business that just pays you good hiring money is inefficient and money would be wasted by the majority of people.

After experiencing both platforms, i will choose affiliate marketing any day. Recruiting isn’t a bad thing, but not everyone can recruit. This is a very interesting post and your experience speaks volume. Thx for the post Tony!

I feel like MLM is an outdated method of making a passive income, but I’ve learned especially recently that I’m just wrong.  I feel that the online business world has moved more in a direction of new and clever ways of doing affiliate marketing, especially in 2020, and more into the direction of e-commerce, specifically print on demand services like TSpring or Printful.  You mention the old way of doing home based business with hotel meetings…isn’t that the way Amway used to operate?  And aren’t they the pioneer of this whole industry?  I could be wrong but curious.  I love seeing Wealthy Affiliate at the top of your list btw.  Wonderful company!

It is very hard to grow or improve much as an affiliate if you are with the type of MLM system which involves little or nothing more than driving paid traffic to a system.

Wealthy Affiliate does indeed teach people to become an authority in their niche, which, if it is in the make money online niche, can involve recommending and reviewing many other products or means to go about affiliate marketing.

  90. Hey Tony, thanks for the honest information your putting out there regarding MLM and affiliate marketing. It’s crucial to be able to differentiate between the two. The way I see it.

Multilevel marketing puts you in a hierarchy, like with any other job. You are incentivized to recruit people to join in on the pyramid below you as down line distributors.

Affiliate marketing is decentralized marketing. There is no one above you nor below you. There is no cost to sign up as an affiliate marketer. You put in the amount of work you want, however you want and directly enjoy the results.

And on top of it, you would have to bother family and friends , as you mentioned, I would hate that ! Perfect article!

MLM’s always seemed like a house of cards. One falls and others follow. Yes, if you can build a strong community under you, you might succeed and even make it to huge profits. But what of those who are under you?

Affiliate marketing is more like being a promoter, a marketer of sorts. AM’s don’t actually take part in the selling process, but they provide plenty of information to help consumers choose. To me, it is a much more ethical approach.

Thanks for sharing your information on these two types of businesses. While both can be done online, I’ll stay with affiliate marketing. It works for me!

A friend recruited me to join an online company, and told me I can be my own boss etc. By this time I knew nothing about online business, so I decided to join this online company(Karatbars)… But, I soon regretted it. In fact I spent lots of money to join and be able to be their Ambassador. And I’ve never been able to make my money back. I realized that MLM isn’t the type of business I wanna be part of, I can’t spend my whole time trying to recruit people on the internet.

Then, I made some research, and found this amazing business model called Affiliate Marketing. I wish I had started this business earlier honestly.

Anyway, great comparison of the two Tony.

I like this route better because it takes an honest review and the person gets to decide whether he or she will purchase. Still takes a lot to build up trust, like an MLM, but it becomes more about giving your review as opposed to trying to sign someone up in your MLM so you can make a buck.

  105. I can understand why some people may get confused about the nuances and differences between these two types of businesses. MLM’s rely heavily on tapping into and creating a large personal network, while affiliate marketing is more of a sales and commission type of business model. Even if someone decides to join a MLM because it seems like a good option for them, they should do their friends and family a favor and avoid trying to sign them up too.

It always seemed so sleezy to me the way the people above me would not at all even try to qualify the leads and just wanted to bring in anyone who would listen to the pitch. I could not agree more that affiliate marketing is the way to go. You are not trying to sell people on something that you know they don’t need, but help suggest and guide them towards offers that they are already interested in to begin with. The thing I like best about affiliate marketing is that the products I am suggesting are ones that I can really get behind and ones that I truly believe in.

Great article you wrote. It really captures the essence of Multi-Level Marketing and Affiliate marketing. I would get nervous making my list and then approaching friends and family. We all know the question, don’t we? I would always get the question How much do you make? The answer I would give is I don’t ask you how much you make. I just started. Do you see an opportunity here for your self? To me, MLM feels like you have to be a pitchman to succeed. MLM is not for me; I am not a closer or a pusher. If you want it, buy it. If not, that’s okay.
The way at best with MLM, I made my money back, never made money.

  110. I prefer affiliate marketing myself. With affiliate marketing, there is no arm twisting. You are simply presenting something to people that they want. If they are interested, then they will buy it.

MLM on the other hand, You have to convince someone to join this or that program. I have joined an MLM in the past and never made any money from it. No more MLM’s for me. Affiliate marketing only.

And in affiliate marketing depends on you only. That’s what I love about it!

I have always wondered how well can an MLM business be developed using the online world. Have you been able to create a MLM downline in that way?

At the moment I am creating an affiliate marketing business. If an MLM product is effective and fairly priced, I feel the affiliate marketing model can be used to promote the MLM product and earn sales online.

Other good reasons are you do not have to be loyal to just one brand or productseries. You can have multiple. And most MLM companies have strict rules for how to promote the products. As an affiliate marketer you have more freedom .It is perfectly possible to earn with MLM. I know many who do, but the Affiliate marketers I know earn much more. I am a Wealthy Affiliate marketer and I use Global moneyline to build a prospect list, Cashjuice to get more traffic, Webtalk and CBproAds. I had good results with it. And yes People come chasing you instead of you chasing them.

Thank you for sharing this , Affiliate Marketing still remains the better platform for me than MLM, the reason is because, an individual is not still able to learn and earn online without having to necessarily refer other persons to the platform. The process of having to invite people for a particular thing seems very much like a tedious and most times people tend not partake in those kind of venture.

It’s great that there are trainings for everything that can benefit you, so the platform gives you the opportunity to learn how to do certain things. The other thing I really like is it’s completely free and if someone wants more they can upgrade. MLM personally is not my choice because I think that the people who founded it earn the most, no matter how much effort and work someone invested. from my personal experience, i can boldly tell you that 90% of all MLM if not all are ponzi scheme. i have loss at a lot of money to MLM platform in the past, Today I’m happy with affiliate marketing because that is where really the money is without any scam.

Interesting topic I have tried a few MLM products over the years and it wears thin after a while trying to flog off stuff to people you know and your family, love the idea of a true home based business that can work from any location, will definitely be checking out the links on your site, so I can see how to do this for myself.

Like the idea of not having to rely on anyone else except for myself and my own hard word to succeed.  Thanks for sharing.

  141. Hello Tony! Thanks for dropping this article. You did a very great comparison of both of them. Personally, i think both of them have a similar business structure. One is direct (MLM) and the other is indirect (affiliate marketing). I think it is just up to personal preference but for me I prefer affiliate marketing over MLM. Nice juxtaposition Tony, Nice work!

  142. I like them both, I have done MLM first and now I am doing more affiliate marketing.

So, from that experience, I will say that affiliate marketing is easier to do. And it is more suited for newcomers in the online market. You can choose the products you want to promote and start right away producing content. And you can enjoy free marketing from search engines when your content is SEO friendly. So, you basically can do affiliate marketing with little to no start-up capital.

MLM will demand a certain capital to join the company, you will have to meet certain criteria in order to receive your monthly income. So it is not easy to do, plus you will need to invite people to join and that may be the biggest part of your business.

I hope people will get to see this great review that you made here, they will get a better understanding.

    Thanks

  143. I prefer Affiliate marketing over MLMs. Its not that people are not successful with MLMs, but its always a preference. You need a personality of constantly reaching out to people. I do not like to force people or friends or family into something at all. So I refrain from MLMs opportunity.

With affiliate marketing, I feel like I am not pushing people and letting them make their own decision when I recommend product to them, and this important to me.

Thank you for very detailed comparison of both opportunity!!

  144. Affiliate Marketing is way better than chasing friends and families and also bares great commissions and is passive. MLM contains too many scams in it and patience is the success. Affiliate marketing can also, on the other hand, be non-profitable if one does not do proper cookie research about the company they opt to promote its products. Nice article Tony.

Though most of businesses brand themselves as one but their intent is bad, now that’s what make them scam not MLM. But then if I were to chose between one, I’ll prefer to go with affiliate marketing because it makes you in charge like being in full control. But that’s not so with MLM. Well, you’ve really said lots about it.

AM’s don’t actually take part in the selling process, but they provide plenty of information to help consumers choose. To me, it is a much more ethical approach.

I agree that MLM is more like a Sales job. That is why I embrace affiliate marketing and the concept of it. Even though I can sell, I WOULD prefer to not have to convince family and friends or others to purchase anything. Also, with MLM, if your downline does not step up, you cannot make any money! With affiliate marketing, it is much easier and fun to know that 3 Billion people from all over the world are out there searching the internet daily and can come across your website. Great read here with your article Tony!

I do believe your suggestion to work with WA as way to move beyond the approach you describe in the opening comment is absolutely a great suggestion that can be successful providing you are dedicated.  And that means lots of time behind the keyboard.  It requires dedication and so its not for everybody who wants an easy life. Ironically, that is precisely what it offers if you do work hard, it will pay dividends in due course.  But sadly, some people are only interested in immediate gratification.  I admire you for your dedication and hard work, not to mention the research you must have done.

This article talks about affiliate market vs. MLM.  MLM involves getting a lot of other people involved in your business.  Affiliate marketing, like Wealthy Affiliates, allows you to work from home without involving a lot of people in your business.  You can just put yourself out there, and consumers come to you.

They explained how they work and I must say I did not like the level structure.
Later on, I realized that it is an outright MLM company and after about 2 months left.

Since then I don’t like any multi-level marketing and in my opinion, this kind of business is pretty much the same as pyramid schemes.

There is no doubt that affiliate marketing is a much better business model and people – newbies have much higher chances to make a consistent income than with any company operating in multi-level.

  171. Ha, yes, that’s exactly what I most hate about the MLM idea. It’s just a lot of bugging other people for them to join the new idea/venture. And the worst part is that even when you have all the good intentions and even when you’re not being pushy about the thing, people still tend to grow at least a little resentful towards you if for any reason they themselves have secretly decided that such a business model can never work. But it’s even worse, if people do get pushy with it as up-lines (at least from my experience) tend to be very aggressive and just socially unaware in general, at least the inexperienced ones.

Yeah, no doubt about it. I’m 100% with you on that. Affiliate marketing is just the better way. Always. <3

Both methods you will earn commissions. MLM companies likes you to host parties to make sales and now they host online group parties on social media sites. Over these two methods I still prefer affiliate marketing to MLM companies.

I think MLM involves much effort without reward being a sector in which everything that is entered requires a sale, that is, to convince a person to buy the product or to become a seller by weaving their own network of referrals, this requires a great effort of time and to contact hundreds of people. Living from MLM online is not something that is achieved overnight and requires large doses of patience and work.

    Excellent explanation!

  182. I can definitely relate to joining MLM. I started back after I graduated high school and thought that it could give me extra income while learning how to do sales (I soon figured that I wasn’t very skilled at selling things to people).

But recruiting people, especially the closest people to me, wasn’t the best experience. Some did follow me but up till now, I do feel a sense of regret as I was convincing them to join into something that didn’t work out and truthfully was a scam.

I now try to earn money online, quietly at home without disturbing anyone, and I think this is an area that I could thrive the best.

I’m still in the early stages of making money online but I can’t wait to continue and see what lies ahead in the future 🙂

You have included a knowledgable background on the history of Affiliate Marketing and MLM which I found interesting.

I love how you have shown your readers that WA online and as a potential client, one can do the training at half the cost of attending lessons at university

I was once involved in MLM with a few organisation including Avon, they have five levels that I never knew about and I used to be a representative on the bottom level, but nobody ever discussed with me the different levels or what commission if any I ever received.

I agree that there is a better way to earn extra income and that is through Affiliate Marketing.

I very much liked how you lead the person reading your web blog on to other avenues to earn extra money, through affiliate marketing.

Overall, I found your topic excellent and very interesting.

It was a high ticket purchase and was very hard to get others to join it. I really do prefer the affiliate marketing route, you write information that is useful and helpful on products that people want and they purchase the product through your link. A more satisfying and rewarding way to spend the day.

With affiliate marketing, it’s different since I can tell my honest opinion and it’s up for the buyers or readers to decide it it is what they need. But with MLM, I need to sugar coat everything for them to join, so I can get a commission. 🙁

  189. Thanks so much for this post Tony, it’s crucial to understand the difference between affiliate marketing and multi-level marketing. Because often it is not too clear what the differences are. One big difference that I know of is having to recruit people for MLM, while with AM is just promoting. But I have a very important question to ask now, and would be grateful if you (or any other of you here, guys) could answer my question: If, as a member of an affiliate platform such as Legendary Marketer or Wealthy Affiliate, I am promoting those platforms as their affiliate, isn’t it in a way a sort of MLN too..? Because I’m kind of ‘recruiting’ people by joining my recommended program, and I’ll receive a small reward for that, isn’t that true? I’m asking this question because recently I’ve heard that Legendary Marketer is MLM, which confused me. Many thanks for your clarification!

I didn’t really yield much and was spending so much money on the product, to where it didn’t make any sense to keep going.

Luckily I found real estate and affiliate marketing and this is where I belong long term. I love the idea of having places to where you can promote your products and services to people and to help them out as well along the way.

People like diversity and don’t want to buy products from one brand only so you have to keep attracting new clients all time and also get new downlines which is even more difficult. Affiliate marketing is much more natural and has a bigger potential.

  206. Deciding what business we will do and what we will earn from, what we will dedicate time to, everyone should do for themselves. If I choose to make money online, there is no reason to put pressure on family and friends to do the same and to actually participate in an MLM campaign. There is enough space on the internet that we can make smart money and not work for someone. Good luck to everyone.

  207. The difference between MLM and affiliate marketing is that one is mostly done offline and the other online.  However, they both of similarity in that people are meant to sell other people’s products to get a commission.

With MLM, the bigger you build a team (or downline), the more commissions they should make if you have duplicated your business efforts well.  They need to build a team, like you have built yours, thus driving you further up the commission ladder.  Bonus payouts in MLM are to be had and that’s what I like about MLM.  Also, their products should sell well.

In affiliate marketing, especially digital products, it is very easy to be scammed into buying a bad product to promote.  However, if you are allowed to try before you buy, then it is less likely that will happen.

Of the 2 business models, I prefer affiliate marketing, because you can just set the system up and almost forget it.  You can go on holiday for 2 weeks while money is flowing into your account.  I think affiliate marketing is passive income streams at its finest…Well worth the initial time and money spent if you find a winning hot product to promote.

  208. Hi Tony

I think that you have hit the nail on the head as affiliate marketing  wins hands down compared to MLMs. It is more safer and easier to make money from as you do not have to pressurise people to join your group and in the process irritate your friends and family.  I think people are getting fed up of all these failed MLMs, which takes your money and you get very little in return.

If you want to learn one thing online, affiliate  marketing is the way to go.

It brought a lot of memories back about my MLM history.Your last statement filled my heart with hope and expectations and I cant wait to get there ‘let’s get to where you’re being successful without chasing Family & Friends then they’ll come chasing you.’. This will be a great a great achievement for me.

You have provided a good overview/comparison of these two business models.  I too have been involved in both and have success in both.  I am finding that affiliate marketing is more to my liking because I do not have to recruit to earn and I am not earning from someone’s work.  However, it is still necessary to bring people to my sites.  I feel like I am more in control with affiliate marketing.

I have had so many family members and friends invited me to MLMs and I have in fact joined a few of them, that at this point in life I would not want to join an MLM nor listen to promotions about them ever again in my life. So your post has been very useful to me. Affiliate marketing suits me way better. Thank you!

At least on the internet, you can find like-minded people who will share your passion for what you do, and not just join you because they feel obligated.

I am in no way involved with any MLM or network marketing companies anymore as I like to work on my own and not have to try and motivate a team to work too. But some people love to manage a team, and for these MLM and network marketing will work perfectly.

  213. On an honest review about this. I totally disagree with MLM because i dislike the idea of continuously telling others to join me and earn commission from them is basically not my thing. Affiliate marketing is cool, You don’t get to bug anyone, just put in the hard work and you would see your self on the success lane.

Your article will benefit everyone for informative reasons. Nowadays affiliate marketing has spread rapidly through which anyone can earn money from home. A true example of this is the Wealthy Affiliate Platform which collaborates from building a website to bringing sales through an affiliate. I myself am a member of Wealthy Affiliate from where I became proficient through training. Today I am successful in the world of affiliate marketing. Finally, I can say without hesitation that affiliate marketing is more important than MLM and much more effective now.

  215. Based on experience I am not fond of MLM. I started out excited and hopeful as I targeted family and friends, but got disheartened when I had to be nudging them into doing business with me and later began to dislike myself when. i know they tried to avoid me. Sometimes the products were good, but most of the money I hoped to earn would have had to come from recruiting. I am working with Wealthy Affiliates and I am liking what I am seeing so far. I would like, though to become a member of Global and Web talk, which both sound like I would enjoy working on those. Thanks for your tips

  216. Hi Tony, as always, very interesting article. I’m relatively new in online business, especially affiliate marketing and also found wealth affiliate helpful with its large community and support system. Frankly, I haven’t rally taken off and just starting to enjoy the blogging experience, while still working to expand audience and hopefully will be able to monetize. Thanks for the great article!

  217. Thank you Tony,

I always enjoy reading about how you started and I try to follow your lead. I complete get about family and friends and that was exactly my thoughts. Once I can prove that you can make an income as a Digital Marketer then everyone wants to be your friend. I suppose that is like that in life all the time.

    Great review and suggestions.

  218. I think the biggest problem for me with MLM is that I believe you need to be a certain kind of person to make it work.

I think you have to be very good at convincing people that they are making a great decision buying the products you are selling. I think that requires quite a bit of extrovert personality. You not only have to ‘infect’ enthusiasm to people you are selling to, you also have to do the same with the people you want to recruit. Recruiting people I believe requires more skill as you have to keep your downline motivated, and that is very hard.

  219. Thanks for sharing this article to know more about Affiliate Marketing VS MLM.

I must say I’ve tried both and for me I will keep at Affiliate Marketing, for one main reason, when I worked on a couple of MLM I had to work hard to get only a few dollars from what I did, it never sound good to me.

When someone starts to work with affiliate marketing, you will know that business is yours, you will be in charge of making the good or bad decisions to help your business grow, even if you do some bad decisions, you can keep working on it and you will see it growing, and from my point of view, when you work on your own affiliate marketing website, you can work on the niche you love and you know something about it, and you can decide what products you will be making reviews, (when working on an MLM you are limited by the company products only)

There are more chances of success with affiliate marketing and there is one of the best training with Wealthy Affiliate and if you think about making and income from your website, the sky is the limit, but you will need to work hard and be patient as it takes also time to see your website to grow and make money.

  220. Lovely work Tony, just the comparison I was looking for. And u have assessed each so well. Thank u for this. Sales is indeed a difficult proposition nowadays, with everyone so wary of salesmen. And that’s what MLMs make us do. On the other hand, Affiliate marketing is a concept where u don’t have to go to anyone. They come to u via the blogs you write and the visits to your website.

I totally love the idea behind affiliate marketing. Big fan!

  221. I think that it was my experience with MLM that led to me seeking to have my own online business. I did make some money with MLM but it was not consistant. The pressure to recuit was also a bit too much for me because I quickly learned that your excitement about the product or business is not easily transmitted to family and friends. The compensation plan is also somewhat like the pyramid. Affiliate marketing is different and success is dependent on your understanding of running an online business and your willingness to stick to it until you begin to see a ROI.

  222. Thanks for this great companion of affiliate marketing vs mlm. Like you I never saw asking my friends and family as an effective way to make money much less build a business.

I think affiliate marketing and getting traffic from search engines is far better because like you said you tap into the billions of people around the world.

I’m your opinion, how long does if take to start earning money with affiliate marketing?

Its honest, clear and describes the thoughts and experiences that I’ve certainly had. You offer a good number of affiliate programs that are out there and the post is short but still comprehensive enough to be informative to the reader. Nice post.

  224. MLM requires patience and for one to be a society’s person as it requires a lot of marketing skills. I think that is why most do not succeed in it. From my analysis, it takes on average 4-5 years of consistency for one to be highly successful in MLM. The bad part about it is that it not passive one need to be active all the time as opposed to affiliate marketing. Great review Tony.

  225. Nothing against people who are part of MLM companies but the pressure it puts you through and the anxiety it portrays on your daily life it’s just not worth it. I have seen so many friends joining MLM companies and trying to convince everyone to buy products or join the company yourself. Most of them even making fake customer reviews to try and confidence their audience of how successful their business is. Affiliate marketing takes time to learn, process and put in some action into those ideas that you may have. You won’t become a millionaire by night but you will see progress along your journey in this business.

  226. Personally, i think both of them have a similar business structure. One is direct (MLM) and the other is indirect (affiliate marketing). I think it is just up to personal preference but for me I prefer affiliate marketing over. I just hate being stuck with the products that I do not use but have to monthly maintaining the account. There is something about MLM or network marketing to be a cult like in my opinion. I think I am going to stick with affiliate marketing and keep practicing my SEO strategy and campaign.

  227. I’ve tried MLM and it just wasn’t for me. It’s not because you have to work really hard because you have to do that in affiliate marketing too but it’s that you have to do the recruiting as you said. Of course, now in the times, we’re living we can’t really do face to face meetings so personally I just feel that affiliate marketing has a lot of advantages.

Same thing happened to me however they later jumped in when they saw my first cash out. Affiliate marketing is the way at the moment.

  229. While they may seem similar, affiliate marketing and MLM are worlds apart, in my belief.

MLM’s always seemed like a house of cards. One falls and others follow. Yes, if you can build a strong community under you, you might succeed and even make it to the huge profits.

While both can be done online, I’ll stay with the affiliate marketing. It works for me!

  230. Affiliate marketing and Multi Level marketing are the two most popular if not only (correct me if I’m wrong) digital marketing varieties that there is. I have heard a lot about and also seen a lot of platforms which operate with either but I have to say that based on personal experience, I think affiliate marketing is more trustworthy and profitable.

  231. Another good post on what affiliate marketing looks to give to people bas opposed to what affiliate marketing wants to give to people and it is very easy to see that there is a big difference between what they want to offer. Anytime everytime, I would prefer to take affiliate marketing because of the income potential

  232. Affiliate marketing is just the best mean of making money online if to ask me because it’s better and no one would be asking you to recruit other people before you can earn. Here you work hard and from there you can make some money and also you don’t need to have my capital to start it at all which is another benefit

  234. Affiliate marketing is way up ahead of mlm and I will always prefer it to mlm. Considering my personal experience so far with the two. Mlm has really been an issue for me especially the fact I must recruit more people especially the ones who know me and family members. And in most cases, it always ends woefully.
